Frequently asked questions about our Hungary tours

Where will I visit in Hungary?

In Hungary, we include guided sightseeing and free time in the captivating capital of Budapest. From here, our tours journey through the Hungarian countryside to Serbia, and onwards to Balkan countries such as Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia and Montenegro.

And these trips visit other Balkan countries too?

Correct! All of our Hungary tours visit neighboring Balkans countries. In all, our Hungary tours take in Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Greece, Romania, Bulgaria, Germany, Austria, Czechia and Serbia, as well as parts of eastern Germany. So you're not short of options!

What is the standard of accommodation on your Hungary tours?

On the majority of our Hungary tours, you can choose from 4 or 5-star accommodation. Of course, the 5-star tour is a little more expensive, but you benefit from the best accommodation the Balkans can offer. The choice is yours!

When is the best time to visit Hungary?

Hungary experiences four distinct seasons. Summer from June - August is the hottest time of year, with temperatures frequently hitting 30 degrees Celsius and above. And winter from December - February can be very cold, but the Christmas markets in Budapest are well worth a visit and the country's ski resorts are a cheaper alternative to the Alps!

The best time to visit Budapest for sightseeing are the shoulder seasons of spring (March - May) and autumn (September - November), characterized by pleasant weather and smaller crowds than the highs of summer. We've got a more detailed guide on when to visit Hungary in our Travel Guide.

Will I have a tour guide as part of my Hungary tour package?

Our Hungary tours are fully escorted by a local tour leader, who will be on hand throughout your trip. For some included sightseeing, you will also enjoy the services of local expert guides.

Is Hungary a safe destination for travellers from the LGBTQ+ community?

According to the 2023 LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index, Hungary scores a C- rating for LGBTQ+ traveler safety, ranking 67th out of 203 countries.

Civil unions / partnerships are legalized, and there are constitutional and worker protections in place for people of all sexual orientations. Incitement to commit hate crimes against members of the LGBTQ+ community is criminalized and 26 - 50% of consulted citizens consider Hungary a good place to live for gay and lesbian people. There are no legal punishments for same sex relations and most trips for LGBTQ+ travelers to Hungary are trouble-free.

The LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index is designed to provide a good overall picture of attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community in each country and may not reflect the experience of foreign travelers to the country.

Can I drink the tap water in Hungary?

The tap water in Budapest and across Hungary is safe to drink. Why not bring a reusable water bottle on tour with you? This will save you money and reduce your plastic footprint whilst travelling, a win-win!

What transportation do you use in Hungary?

In Hungary we make use of private minibuses and coaches with comfortable seating and large windows for admiring the view as we travel between destinations.

What is the currency in Hungary?

The official currency in Hungary is the Hungarian Forint. Check OANDA for the latest exchange rates. Note that the countries of the Balkans use a variety of different currencies, so it is easiest to pay by credit or debit card if travelling through a number of countries, or to withdraw cash locally.

What is the current travel advice for Hungary?

As a UK-based tour operator, we follow the travel advice of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCDO). You can see the most up to date advice for Hungary travel here.
