Nations of the United Kingdom

The UK is made up of four nations, England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Although comprising one country, each has a fierce national identity and a unique history and culture to discover.
Winchester Cathedral

England

England's history is a tapestry woven with tales of conquest, monarchy, and industrial revolution. From the Tudor dynasty to the British Empire, its past shapes its present. English history is full of chequered characters, from Henry VIII to Shakespeare, Wordsworth to Queen Victoria. English culture embraces literature, theatre, and iconic traditions like afternoon tea and fish & chips! The stiff upper lip remains a symbol of resilience. England's national identity intertwines with its historic grandeur, embracing both tradition and modernity.

Isle of Skye Scotland

Scotland

Scotland's history is marked by clans, battles, and a quest for independence. The Scots have proudly preserved their distinct cultural heritage through music, dance, and the iconic kilt. The bagpipes echo tales of valour, while tartan patterns tell familial stories. With a rich literary tradition and a breathtaking landscape, Scotland's national identity is deeply rooted in a sense of resilience and a unique, proud heritage. Away from the main population centres, the Scottish Isles are hauntingly beautiful, vast expanses of wild and windswept nature.

Conwy Castle Wales

Wales

Wales, with its ancient Celtic roots, boasts a history of myths, legends, and resistance. Castles dot the landscape, remnants of a turbulent past and a history of invasion, mostly from its English neighbour. The Welsh language, vibrant in poetry and song, is a testament to cultural endurance. Wales celebrates its folklore through festivals, emphasizing a strong connection to its Celtic origins. The dragon, emblazoned on the national flag, symbolizes the Welsh spirit—tenacious, proud, and deeply connected to its historical roots.

Enniskillen - Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland's narrative unfolds against a backdrop of resilience, history, and cultural richness. Shaped by a turbulent past, from ancient Celtic roots to the Troubles, the region's story is one of tenacity and transformation. Its cultural mosaic weaves together Gaelic traditions and vibrant contemporary expressions. From the haunting melodies of traditional music to the thriving arts scene, Northern Ireland radiates a distinctive charm. The lush landscapes and historic landmarks, such as the Dark Hedges echo tales of a captivating heritage.

Frequently asked questions about our tours to the United Kingdom

Do your tours visit England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland?

All of our tours of Great Britain start and finish in either London or Edinburgh. We have shorter tours of 3 days and longer tours up to 12 days that take in some of the main highlights of England and Scotland. Several of our tours also explore Wales, in particular some of its historic castles and Snowdonia National Park. Take a look at our tour offering at the top of this page to see our full range of trips to the UK!

We also offer tours on the island of Ireland, including Northern Ireland. These all start in Belfast or Dublin.

What is the pace of these United Kingdom trips like?

Our UK tours are quite fast-moving. You will see lots of different places but we often visit two or three destinations (including major cities) in a day, stopping for a few hours at a time in places like Stratford-upon-Avon, Whitby and St Ives. There is plenty of free time in which to further sightsee independently, as well as guided sightseeing.

What sort of accommodation will I stay in on these United Kingdom package trips?

All of our UK tours include simple but comfortable and welcoming accommodation in guesthouses, on a bed and breakfast basis. These are typically small, family run houses and the group may be split between several accommodation options. They usually offer complimentary Wi-Fi connection but not always. They tend to be on the outskirts of town, perhaps a 20 minute walk from the main attractions. Many of the guesthouses we use offer shared bathroom facilities.

For a small supplement, we can upgrade you to 3-star hotel accommodation. You can see the prices for this upgrade on each of our online tour pages. The hotels are typically in a more central location and offer private, ensuite bathroom facilities.

When is the best time to visit the UK?

Although the UK is a year-round destination, the best time to visit is generally the summer months from June - August, which offers the best weather. These months tend to be when the region is at its busiest though, so you may wish to consider visiting during the shoulder seasons. Spring lasts from March - May and autumn is from September - November.

What transport do you use on your United Kingdom package trips?

In the UK we travel in 16-seater Mercedes minibuses with comfortable seating, air-conditioning and large windows. There are no toilets on board but regular comfort breaks are made throughout the trip. We also make use of ferries where applicable, and all ferry tickets are included in the cost of your tour.

How big are the groups on your UK trips?

In the United Kingdom, the maximum group size is 16. On a sold out tour this means that the minibus will be full, but each guest will have plenty of room. If travelling outside of peak seasons, then group sizes may be smaller.

Will I be escorted by a tour guide?

Yes. All of our tours are escorted by a local driver-guide who will keep you entertained with stories and history about the UK. At some attractions you will also enjoy the services of expert local guides. Please note that on some of our longer tours, your guide may change halfway through the trip, as will some members of the group who are only participating in a section of the tour.

Is the UK a safe destination for travellers from the LGBTQ+ community?

According to the 2023 LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index, the UK scores an A- rating for LGBTQ+ traveller safety, ranking 10th out of 203 countries.

Same sex marriage is legal, and there are worker protections in place for people of all sexual orientations. 76 - 100% of consulted citizens consider the UK a good place to live for gay and lesbian people. There are no legal punishments for same sex relations and most trips for LGBTQ+ travellers to the UK are trouble-free.

The LGBTQ+ Travel Safety Index is designed to provide a good overall picture of attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community in each country and may not reflect the experience of foreign travellers to the country.

Can I drink the tap water?

Yes, the tap water across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland is safe for human consumption. We recommend bringing a reusable water bottle on your UK tour. This will save you money and is good for the environment, helping you to reduce your plastic footprint.
